Eagle Eye - Vick vows to run more

Vick vows to run more

Now that he’s officially named the starter for this season, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is letting people in on his plans for this season.

He plans to run, and he doesn’t plan on getting hurt because of it.

This, obviously, doesn’t fit what’s happened during his run as the starting quarterback for the Eagles. He’s gone down with various injuries, including a couple of concussions and rib injuries, which have stemmed from running the ball.

“When you go into a football game not wanting to get hurt, trying not to get hurt, it doesn't allow you to play the way that you want to play,” Vick told reporters.

There’s no question that Vick became one of the country’s favorite players because of his ability to run with the ball. He always seemed to be playing to pass first under Andy Reid, but now that Chip Kelly’s offense allows him to run a bit more he’s looking forward to getting back to his old ways.

"I will be a threat," he said. "I'm going to have my opportunities to do the things I like to do within this offense and to run the football. That's exciting."

The 33 year-old doesn’t appear to be past his prime when it comes to running. He beat LeSean McCoy in a 40-yard dash back in May and had one of his best running seasons back in 2011. When considering years in which he’s had at least 40 rushing attempts, his average of 7.8 yards on 76 attempts two seasons ago was his second-best year behind his only 1,000-yard season in 2006. He averaged 8.4 yards a carry that season on 123 rushes.

Vick prepared for the opportunity to run in the offseason. He’s added some weight and muscle to bump him up to 220 pounds and worked extra on strengthening his legs. The only concern will be if he’s forcing himself to run because he feels like he has to or if he’s taking the opportunities that present themselves naturally in Kelly’s offense.

We should get the first real look at Vick Saturday against the Jaguars. He’ll play at least the first half and could see more time depending on his number of snaps.
