It’s official: Michael Vick will be the starting quarterback for the 2013 Philadelphia Eagles.
Eagles coach Chip Kelly took his time, taking 36 practice opportunities and two preseason games to evaluate his quarterbacks. In the end, no one is really surprised with the direction he decided to go. He made the announcement Tuesday morning, telling reporters he spoke to all of his quarterbacks about the decision.
"I think I proved I could be consistent every day and be a leader on this team," Vick said. "I'm going to take the same approach, the same mindset [into the season].”
Neither Vick nor Nick Foles struggled during the preseason, but Vick’s numbers were a tad more impressive. He was efficient in running the up-tempo scheme and completed 13 of his 15 pass attempts for 199 yards, a touchdown and one pick, which came on a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the half.
The timing was about right. Kelly couldn’t afford to go much longer with the quarterback competition since the third preseason game of the season is coming up this Saturday. This is the game when the starters usually play into the third quarter and get some chemistry going, and having Vick and Foles split the time would put his starters in a bad position come Sept. 9 when the season opens in Washington, D.C.
Vick is set to make $3.5 million this year, with a $500,000 roster bonus that will kick in at the beginning of the season. If he remains healthy, he could make between $500,000 and $1.5 million more depending on the percentage of snaps he takes throughout the season.
Kelly made it clear that only Vick’s health would determine how many snaps he gets to take.
“This is a one‑quarterback operation,” he said. “This isn't going to be someone's got to look over their shoulder or we're going to alternate by series.”
